What is matrescence?

Matrescence is the transition into motherhood.
The term was first coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970s to describe the physical, emotional, hormonal and identity changes a woman goes through after having a baby.

It’s often compared to adolescence ~ because both involve significant shifts in the body and mind. The difference is, matrescence hasn’t been studied or supported in the same way.

For a long time, it wasn’t properly recognised in science or medicine, and it’s still not widely understood today ~ much like other areas of women’s health.

So many women move through this transition without fully knowing what’s happening.
